West Virginia Federal Facilities

The state of West Virginia has three types of federal correctional facilities for federal inmates serving time in the state. First, there are four federal prisons. Then there is one federal correctional complex made up of a few different units. Then they also have one federal prison camp as well.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (FOB) is the government agency in charge of all federal prisons, inmate supervision, and maintaining all West Virginia federal prison inmate records. Federal Prisons

The four federal prisons in West Virginia include:

  • Beckley FCI - a medium-security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum-security satellite camp holding 1,684 male inmates (1,562 at the FCI and 122 at the camp). They allow visitation Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. 
  • Gilmer FCI - a medium-security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum-security satellite camp with 1,512 male inmates (1,431 at the FCI and 81 at the camp). 
  • McDowell FCI - a medium-security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum-security satellite camp with 1,273 male offenders (1,217 at the FCI and 56 at the camp). No visitation is allowed. 
  • Morgantown FCI - a minimum-security federal correctional institution with a detention center with 779 male offenders. 

Federal Correctional Complex

Hazelton FCC is a correctional complex with two units as described below:

  • FCI Hazelton - a medium-security federal correctional institution with a secure female facility with 1,804 male inmates (1,218 at the FCI and 586 at the camp). 
  • USP Hazelton - a high-security U.S. penitentiary with an adjacent minimum-security satellite camp with 1,172 male offenders (1,058 at the USP and 114 at the camp).

No visitation is allowed at the Hazelton campus.

Federal Prison Camp

Alderson FPC is a minimum-security federal prison camp holding 829 female inmates. They allow visitation on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Famous Federal Prison Inmates in West Virginia

  • Eric Conn - used to be a disability attorney, he was found guilty of defrauding the Social Security Administration out of millions of dollars.
  • Whitey Bulger - notorious leader of the Winter Hill Gang in Boston, Mass. He was murdered while in custody on October 30, 2018.
  • Fotios (Freddy) Geas - a member of a mob gang and a suspect in the murder of Whitey Bulger. He is serving a life sentence.
