Indiana Federal Facilities

There is only one type of federal correctional facility in Indiana, and it is a federal prison complex named Terre Haute FCC. There are no other federal prisons in Indiana. This complex consists of two units, FCI Terre Haute and USP Terre Haute. Each has a different level of custody and serves a different demographic.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is the government agency in charge of all federal prison facilities and Indiana federal prison inmate records. The Federal Bureau of Prisons mission statement reads: “We protect public safety by ensuring that federal offenders serve their sentences of imprisonment in facilities that are safe, humane, cost-efficient, and appropriately secure, and provide reentry programming to ensure their successful return to the community.” They employ almost 36,000 staff members to carry out their mission. They serve roughly 177,326 inmates with a recidivism rate of only 34%. The average age of inmates in federal prison in Indiana is 36 years old. More than 67% are non-Hispanic. Over 92% are male and the rest female.

Terre Haute Federal Correctional Complex (FCC)

Terre Haute FCC has two units described below. Both have access to the commissary, visitation schedules, and prisoners have access to educational programs as well as work-release and other vocational studies.

  • FCI Terre Haute - A medium-security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum-security satellite camp serving 1,295 male offenders (322 at the camp, and 973 at the FCI).
  • USP Terre Haute - A high-security U.S. penitentiary holding 1,363 male inmates.

Famous Federal Prison Inmates in Indiana

Timothy McVeigh - convicted of the 1995 Oklahoma bombing which killed 168 people. He was executed.

Juan Raul Garza - drug kingpin convicted in 1993 for murder and ordering the murder of rival gang members. He also was executed.

Louis Jones, Jr. - convicted in 1995 of kidnapping, sexually abusing and then murdering US Army Private Tracie Joy McBride. He, too, was executed for his crimes.
