For some, the idea of travel conjures up images of sandy beaches and drinks with umbrellas in them. For others, it means standing in lines, airport delays, and traffic. What you may not consider when traveling is the extreme danger that awaits you in some American cities.

Detroit Michigan

Detroit Michigan holds the title for the most dangerous city in America. Violent crimes are very popular in Detroit. In fact, you are five times more likely to be a victim of violent crime in Detroit than any other place in the U.S. Poverty is also rampant in Detroit clocking in at a whopping 30.4%. So if you need a job, look elsewhere.

St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis, Missouri comes in close second as a vacation destination to avoid. St. Louis is a very murderous state ranking highest in gun-related homicide with more than ten times the national average of death records.. With an alarming, violent crime rate of 1913 per 100,000 people, it’s probably best to pass on St. Louis for other, safer cities when traveling.

Memphis Tennessee

The former home of Elvis Presley, Memphis Tennessee is a hotbed for poor folks and high crime rates. A scarce police force and a poverty rate of almost 28% combine to create a powder keg of violence. Although you might be tempted to visit Graceland, do so during the day and watch your back!

Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore, Maryland is leading the pack when it comes to increasing violent crime in the United States. The excessive violence in Baltimore brought up the national average in just one year. Places to avoid are poor city neighborhoods where gangs are to blame for 80% of the gun-related deaths. Stay out of dark alleyways, and you should be ok.

Rockford, Illinois

2016 was a lousy year to live in Rockford, Illinois that racked up 26 murders and another 1,659 violent crimes. Law enforcement took notice and beefed up their forces, which helped to control the problem but not keep them off the list of most dangerous cities to visit or live.

Kansas City, Missouri

It seems as though Kansas City is trying to win a prize. From 2015 to 2016 violent crime spiked 18 percent! The most popular offenses committed were murder and assault. With more than four times the national rate, Kansas City may be a place you want to pass on visiting, if you can.

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland is an area rampant in poverty with 36.2%, and often poverty equals more crime records. It sure does in Cleveland where violent crime is at 1,631 per 100,000 people. Making matters worse, the community and law enforcement don’t get along due to officers using excessive violence against citizens and violating rights. If you don’t love five-o, then stay out of Cleveland.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

If you value your belongings, then stay clear of Milwaukee. Along with a high murder and assault rate, Milwaukee loves to steal your stuff. Coming in as the fifth worst robbery state in America, you will want to lock up those jewels when traveling to Wisconsin. Oh and you might want to rent a car, they have four times the national vehicle theft as well.

Little Rock, Arkansas

Little Rock residents sure do like to fight! They hold the 6th place for more aggravated assaults in the country and more than four times the national average. In response, the police have increased patrols but if you don’t want to leave Little Rock, black and blue, better go somewhere else.

Oakland, California

Even sunny California has its problems. Oakland, California, as compared with the neighboring state of San Francisco is pretty aggressive. Robbery appears to be a specialty in Oakland, so keep your goods under wraps when traveling there. Coming in 7th in the nation for grand theft auto, stealing cars seems to be something Oakland is quite good at.

The next time you are planning a trip be sure to consult this list first to make sure you are not rushing into a firestorm of violence and robbery. It also might make sense to start packing some mace in your pocket just in case.
