The Massachusetts Probate and Family Court is responsible for all matters dealing with families, children, and estate laws. This particular judicial division has 14 division and aims to “deliver timely justice to the public by providing equal access to a fair, equitable and efficient forum to resolve family and probate legal matters and to assist and protect all individuals, families, and children in an impartial and respectful manner.” Probate and Family Court handles highly emotional and sensitive matters such as divorce, marriage annulment, child support, child custody, adoption, paternity, parental rights, and abuse prevention.
Other issues the Massachusetts Probate and Family Court deal with are estate issues such as wills, trusts, conservatorships, inheritance, and name changes.
For the year 2018, the Massachusetts Probate and Family Court resolved a total of 131,038 matters. Of that total, 51,178 were for estate issues, and 79,860 were for family matters like adoption, divorce and child custody.
